Geomontage

This project was to upcycle material of National Geographic magazines that were found in vintage shops and charity shops. The project approach revolves around the idea of using the assets found within an image to create a contemporary visual with a new narrative, thus creating a new way of seeing these iconic magazines. The process for the artwork starts with each image being manipulated within its own unique setting, with each sample presenting its own challenge. I am looking to create new meaning from existing objects, every image is re-composed and therefore recycled to create a new visual with a totally different set of potential interpretations.

The series, "Geomontage” was meticulously cut using a sharp blade and adhesive tape, deconstructed and reinvented to produce the new images. The central objects that are removed, annotated and manipulated to this collage series are the images within the rectangular box in bright yellow. This is visually transformed by rearranging the components created from slicing these old photographic magazines covers into equal vertical and horizontal lines, without adding or removing anything from them, to generate a completely reinvented new image. This series is an ongoing project that expands as I collect more subject material.

Watch this space because there’s more to come!
