Much attention has been given recently, in the

media, to the tragic cases of baby lives lost and

damaged while in state and church care in Ireland.

In May 1955, an eleven-month-old healthy baby girl was placed in the care of the nuns at a catholic

industrial school in Ireland, where she was due to spend two weeks while her mother recovered from an illness. At the time, the baby’s father was working abroad and this option had been highly recommended to the mother by senior hospital staff.

After just four days in the nuns’ care, the baby died. The nuns claimed it was due to a stomach infection. When the parents tried to get more information, they were told “it was only a baby” and were sent away. In 1996 the case was re-investigated by the Gardai and the nuns were brought to court.
